John Hassall exhibition
John Hassall: Illustrator and Poster Artist
22 May - 29 Aug
The first exhibition in over 50 years to examine the life and work of John Hassall (1868-1948), the so-called Poster King, will run at the Heath Robinson Museum in Pinner from 22 May to 29 August 2021.
With exhibits borrowed from over 25 different lenders, the exhibition seeks not only to show key examples from Hassall's immense back catalogue of poster designs, but also to reveal his astonishing versatility. Visitors can see preliminary sketches for advertisements and book jackets, finished artworks, magazine covers, large paintings, china figurines, postcards, photographs, personal objects and designs Hassall produced for the nursery.
With loans from the Hassall family and private collectors, as well as the Bodleian Library, Museum of Brands and London Transport Museum, the exhibition pays tribute to one of Britain's best-loved and most influential artists.
The exhibition is accompanied by my latest book, 'John Hassall - The Life & Art of the Poster King' (Unicorn Publishing, 2021).
Visit www.heathrobinsonmuseum.org to check on opening times and to book tickets.
I will be giving at least one 'expert talk' on Hassall at the museum on 16th July.
